Below this hourly rate, a treatment does not even cover the practice's fixed costs.

For most practices the real hourly cost is roughly €40–€90/h.

The hourly cost is the starting point. The rest is the work.

How to calculate the dental chair hourly cost

The chair hourly cost is the practice fixed cost divided by the actually productive hours. The formula is: hourly cost = annual fixed costs ÷ productive hours per year.

Fixed costs include rent, staff, utilities, sterilisation, insurance, software and equipment depreciation. Productive hours are the open hours multiplied by the number of chairs and by the real schedule saturation — not the theoretical hours.

Why it is the single most important number for profitability

Without the hourly cost you cannot tell whether a treatment is really profitable. A €1,200 implant with €350 in materials and €200 in lab looks like €650 profit. But if the hourly cost is €80/h and it takes 3 hours, real profit is €410: the gap is huge and multiplies with every discount.

Knowing the hourly cost tells you the minimum rate below which you are working at a loss, treatment by treatment.

Theoretical vs real cost

This calculator gives you the theoretical hourly cost, on paper. The real cost changes every month with actual expenses and the true schedule saturation.

That is why the hourly cost should be recalculated continuously, not just once: an empty chair or a rise in fixed costs shifts it immediately.
